Its early settlement took place in 1725 as a result of the opening up of the St. Pierre concession. The Côte Saint-Pierre Mission,
(The [parish's]] original name) began in 1750 with the construction of a church whose registers would open in two years.
The Rang Saint-Pierre was the central concession of the Sault-Saint-Louis seigneurie, extending into the La Salle seigneurie. In 1815 the Rang Saint-Pierre was nicknamed "The Black Cattle Road" being the route cattle were transported upon from New York to Montreal. Centrally located in what was then Laprairie County, the village of Saint-Constant was the only location where voting existed from 1829 to 1841. Residents of this area would be impacted by the Lower Canada Rebellion from 1837 to 1838.
In 1945, local administrative bureaucracies emerged in Saint-Constant with the introduction of a parish municipality and school board. However, the vast majority of its territory was already subdivided into Saint-Rémi (1840), Saint-Édouard (1833), and Saint-Isidore (1833). This trend continued with the establishment of Saint-Michel (1854), Saint-Mathieu (1919) and Sainte-Thérèse-de-Delson (1932).
One of its mayors, Solime Cardinal (1815–1897), was the maternal grandfather of Charles-Émile "Charley" Trudeau, the successful French-Canadian entrepreneur. In time he would become a father to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the 15th Canadian Prime Minister, and grandfather to Justin Trudeau, the 23rd and current (2022) Canadian Prime Minister.
In the last quarter of the 19th century, Saint-Constant was transformed by the construction of the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway The electrification of the village occurred around 1918 and rural electrification was completed by 1939. Rue Saint-Pierre was extended in 1950 from Montées-des-Bouleaux/Rue Sainte-Catherine, via the Route 132. With that change, suburban development in Saint-Constant flourished gaining city status in 1973.
