During the Han dynasty it was known as Anyi County, and as Zhongge during the Tang dynasty, then as Pingrong and Ping'an during the Ming and Qing dynasty respectively. In 2015, Ping'an County became Ping'an District.[1]
Ping'an District is divided into three towns and five townships.[2]
The district's three towns are Ping'an [zh], Xiaoxia, and Sanhe.[2]
The district's five townships are Hongshuiquan Township [zh], Shihuiyao Township, Gucheng Township, Shagou Township, and Bazanggou Township [zh].[2]
The district is served by two train stations: the Ping'anyi railway station [zh], and the Haidong West railway station [zh]. The Ping'anyi railway station was first built in 1959 and is operated by the China Railway Qingzang Group.[3] The station is situated on the Lanzhou–Qinghai railway.[citation needed] The Haidong West railway station is situated on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed railway.[4]
National Highway 109 also runs through the district.
