All of Ellingham is for a long stretch bisected by the fairly minor (in national traffic) A143 road which runs from Great Yarmouth in its county to Haverhill in Suffolk. Since March 2002, the hearts of the village of Ellingham and that of Broome were bypassed thus dividing the greater side of Ellingham, sometimes called Ellingham 'East' from Ellingham 'West'.

The village used to have a railway and its station on the Waveney Valley Line which went from Tivetshall to Beccles, today's nearest station.

The River Waveney

Ellingham Mill is on the Waveney (on the Suffolk border). Set around it are some clumps of trees and water meadow suitable for picnics.[3]

On the north-western side of Ellingham, is Ellingham Hall, with outlying woodlands, an 18th-century manor house owned by the Smith family.

Ellingham in the media

During December 2010, Ellingham was frequently covered by and referred to within the news and current media, when Ellingham Hall became the new home for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Assange was released on bail on condition that he stayed at the hall, which current owner Vaughan Smith offered as a temporary place of residence for him.
