The origin of the name Chedgrave is uncertain but is thought to mean either 'Ceatta's pit' or 'Ceatta's grove'.[1]
Chedgrave's southern border with Loddon is delineated by the River Chet. The parish covers 3.52 square kilometres (1.36 sq mi) and had a population of 985 in 430 households at the 2001 census,[2] the population increasing to 1,051 at the 2011 Census.[3] The parish is part of the electoral ward of Chedgrave and Thurton, the population of which at the 2011 Census was 2,713.[4]
