The historical Assyrian tribe of Tyari was located in this district until the Sayfo (Assyrian Genocide).

Northeastern Jewish Aramaic-speaking Jews lived here historically; most fled during the Sayfo, and the last remaining members of the community emigrated to Israel in 1951.[7]

The 2011 Hakkâri attack took place here between the Kurdistan Workers' Party and Turkish soldiers.
