Wonju[lower-alpha 1] (Korean pronunciation: [wʌn.dzu]) is the most populous city in Gangwon province, South Korea. The city is located approximately 140 kilometres (87 mi) east of Seoul. Wonju was the site of three crucial battles during the Korean War.
It borders Yeoju and Yangpyeong-gun in Gyeonggi-do to the west, Chungju-si and Jecheon-si in North Chungcheong Province to the south, Yeongwol-gun in Gangwon-do to the east, and Hoengseong-gun in Gangwon-do to the north. Although it belongs to Gangwon-do, it is not a mountainous area, but rather a basin along the wide plain created by the Seomgang River. The Seomgang River, originating from Cheongil-myeon and Gapcheon-myeon, Hoengseong, passes through Hojeo and Jijeong, and merges with the Namhan River at Buron. Generally, it has a typical central region that is not much different from Seoul, but it is inland and has a basin topography, so it is sometimes foggy in the morning. If you look at the weather forecast that provides weather information for major cities, Wonju is not shown because the weather is similar to Chuncheon and Cheongju.
Wonju City is divided into 1 eup (town), 8 myeon (townships), and 16 dong (neighborhoods).[2]

Wonju is home city of the Wonju DB Promy, playing in the Korean Basketball League. Their home arena is Wonju Gymnasium, which is located in Myeongnyun il-dong, Wonju. The team has won the Championship three times (2002–03, 2004–05, and 2007–08).[17]
A Rail Park has been built on the dismissed rail tracks connecting the stations of Pandae and Ganhyeon, for a total of 6.5 km (4.0 mi). The total ride journey is about 40 minutes, offering scenic views of the surrounding mountains while cycling.[18]
The city created a menu called peach bulgogi and mulberry leaf hwangtae-bap to overcome the reality that there is no original food to offer. There is also a special dish called horse meat (Korean beef roll with vegetables). Before that, as a city with a sluggish tourism industry, it was only able to save face with chueotang and pheasant dumplings. Chuncheon is famous for dakgalbi and makguksu, but there are many restaurants in Wonju as well. There is a restaurant that uses the name 'Chuncheon Dakgalbi' as it is, and there are restaurants as delicious as restaurants in Chuncheon, and it is located in front of the main gate of Wonju Severance Christian Hospital in Ilsan-dong. Hyanggyo’s makguksu was the most famous, and the relatively unknown makguksu made with bitter buckwheat from Musil-dong is comparable. Various kinds of kalguksu, kalguksu, and sundae soup are lined up in the alley of the central market, like Altoran, and there is a shop that used to be in the Human Theater (famous for being run by three generations together). There are many old and famous food stalls in the basement of the free market, but some famous places can be seen lining up during lunch and dinner hours. Tonkatsu with old-fashioned Gyeong-style peel and instant tteokbokki are delicious. Also, there are stalls selling kimbap, sundae, tteokbokki, and tempura. The hand-made dumplings restaurant in Sangjang-dong, which has a North Korean place name, is also famous. On average, soft tofu, mukbap, barley rice, and stone pot rice are also good.
