Ethnic groups


The people in the district are mainly indigenous citizens of Quechua descent. Quechua is the language which the majority of the population (60.79%) learnt to speak in childhood, 38.82% of the residents started speaking using the Spanish language (2007 Peru Census).[2]

Der Distrikt Azángaro liegt in der Provinz Azángaro in der Region Puno in Südost-Peru. Der Distrikt wurde am 21. Juni 1825 gegründet. Er besitzt eine Fläche von 720 km². Beim Zensus 2017 wurden 30.733 Einwohner gezählt. Im Jahr 1993 betrug die Einwohnerzahl 27.325, im Jahr 2007 27.823. Sitz der Provinz- und Distriktverwaltung ist die 3850 m hoch gelegene Stadt Azángaro mit 20.887 Einwohnern (Stand 2017). Azángaro befindet sich 105 km nordnordwestlich der Regionshauptstadt Puno.
