Erdek (formerly Artàke, Greek: Αρτάκη[3]) is a town and district of Balıkesir Province in the Marmara region of Turkey. The population was 34,000 in 2010. Located on the Kapıdağ Peninsula, on the north coast of Gulf of Erdek at the south of the Sea of Marmara, Erdek is known as a holiday destination that is popular among domestic tourists. The area has a rugged geology and topography and evergreen wooded areas. There are also large olive groves.

History

It was a colony of Miletus.[4][3] It revolted together with other Greek cities against the Persian Empire during the Ionian Revolt, but it was burnt by the Persians. Most probably it was not rebuilt after the destruction during the ancient times, because Strabo does not mentioned it.[3] Later, the town was inhabited chiefly after the abandonment of nearby Cyzicus in the early Middle Ages. Briefly, in the late 7th century, it hosted a Cypriot refugee population including the island's archbishop, and was known as Nova Justiniana. During the Ottoman period, Erdek was the center of a kaza in the Sanjak of Karasi. According to the Ottoman General Census of 1881/82–1893, the kaza of Erdek had a total population of 33,007, consisting of 29,165 Greeks, 3,070 Muslims, 300 Jews, 18 Armenians and 454 foreign citizens.[5]

Erdek (griechisch Αρτάκη Artaki, Pithos im 19. Jahrhundert, in der Antike Artake) ist eine Stadt im gleichnamigen Landkreis der türkischen Provinz Balıkesir und gleichzeitig ein Stadtbezirk der 2012 geschaffenen Büyükşehir Belediyesi Balıkesir (Großstadtgemeinde/Metropolprovinz). Seit einer Gebietsreform 2012 ist die Kreisstadt flächen- und einwohnermäßig identisch mit dem Landkreis einschließlich aller Dörfer auch auf den vorgelagerten Inseln Paşalimanı, Zeytinli und Tavşanlı. Die 25 ha große Tavşanlı Adası ist allerdings ein unbewohntes und kahles Eiland. Die nur 0,8 ha messende Zeytinli Ada unmittelbar bei Erdek vor der Küste, die bis zum 12. und 13. Jahrhundert mit einer Kirche sowie einem Kloster bebaut war und im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert während des Osmanischen Reiches als „Quarantäneinsel“ genutzt wurde, ist seit 2006 archäologisches Ausgrabungsgelände und wird touristisch genutzt.[1] Lediglich Paşalimanı Adası ist mit etwa 2000 Einwohner in fünf Dörfern (Paşalimanı, Poyrazlı, Harmanlı, Balıklı und Tuzla) besiedelt. Die türkische Marine betreibt in Erdek einen Stützpunkt.

Эрдек[1][2] (тур. Erdek) — прибрежный город и район в провинции Балыкесир (Турция), на западном берегу полуострова Капыдагы[en], клинообразно вдающегося к северу в Мраморное море и соединенного с материком только очень узким перешейком[1], в 5,5 км к западу от развалин некогда могущественного приморского города Кизика[3]. Берег полуострова Капыдагы образует залив Эрдек, в котором находится остров Тавшан[ceb][2].
