Das County hat eine Fläche von 1998 Quadratkilometern; davon sind 92 Quadratkilometer (4,61 Prozent) Wasserflächen.


Geschichte


Das County wurde am 8. Januar 1873 gebildet und die Verwaltung am 17. April 1884 abschließend organisiert. Benannt wurde es nach Norman B. Campbell, einem Abgeordneten in der gesetzesgebenden Versammlung des Dakota-Territoriums.[2]

Ein Ort im County hat den Status einer National Historic Landmark, die Vanderbilt Archeological Site.[3] Drei Bauwerke und Stätten des Countys sind insgesamt im National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eingetragen (Stand 30. Juli 2018).[4]

Campbell County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,377,[1] making it the fourth-least populous county in South Dakota. Its county seat is Mound City.[2] The county was created in 1873 and organized in 1884.[3] It was named for Norman B. Campbell, a Dakota Territory legislator in 1873 and son of General Charles T. Campbell.[4]
