Nias ist ein indonesischer Regierungsbezirk (Kabupaten) auf der Insel Nias in der indonesischen Provinz Sumatra Utara. Stand 2020 leben hier circa 150.000 Menschen.[1] Der Regierungssitz des Kabupaten Nias ist die Stadt Gido. Ursprünglich umfasste der Regierungsbezirk Nias die komplette Insel, nach mehreren Reformen wurde die Insel letztendlich in vier Regierungsbezirke und eine kreisfreie Stadt eingeteilt.

Geographie

Nias liegt im Osten der Insel Nias, die westlich von Sumatra im indischen Ozean liegt. Der Regierungsbezirk Nias grenzt im Norden an den Regierungsbezirk Nias Utara und die kreisfreie Stadt Gunungsitoli. Im Westen grenzt es an den Regierungsbezirk Nias Barat und im Süden an den Kabupaten Nias Selatan. Administrativ unterteilt sich der Kabupaten Nias in 10 Distrikte (Kecamatan) mit 170 Dörfern (Desa).

Einwohner

2020 lebten in Nias 154.943 Menschen, 79.126 Frauen und 75.817 Männer. Die Bevölkerungsdichte beträgt 84 Personen pro Quadratkilometer. 86 Prozent der Einwohner sind Protestanten, 13 Prozent Katholiken und 1 Prozent Muslime.[1]

Nias Regency is a regency in North Sumatra province, Indonesia; it lies on the east side of Nias Island. The regency originally covered the entire island, but was reduced to the northern half, with an area of 3,495.39 square kilometres, following the creation of the new regency of Nias Selatan in 2003. It was further reduced by the creation of the new regencies of Nias Utara and Nias Barat and the independent municipality of Gunungsitoli from other parts of Nias Regency on 29 October 2008. Since the separation of the new regencies and municipality, the reduced Regency now covers 853.42 km2 of land in the eastern part of the island (partly surrounding the coastal city of Gunungsitoli), and had a population of 131,377 at the 2010 Census[2] and 146,672 at the 2020 Census.[3] The official estimate as at mid 2021 was 147,794.[4]Its seat is the town of Gido.[5]
