Pudasjärvi (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈpudɑsˌjærʋi]) is a town and a municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region, 87 kilometres (54 mi) northeast of the city of Oulu and 130 kilometres (81 mi) southwest of the town of Kuusamo. The town has a population of 7,678 (31 December 2021)[2] and covers an area of 5,867.23 square kilometres (2,265.35 sq mi) of which 228.67 km² (88.29 sq mi) is water. The population density is 1.36 inhabitants per square kilometre (3.5/sq mi).[1] Pudasjärvi is by area the second largest town in Finland (as of 2006, Rovaniemi is the largest) and one of the largest in the world.

Pudasjärvi is famed for its nature, and is the home of the southernmost fell area in Finland, Syöte.

The oldest dated rock formations within the European Union can be found in Siuruankylä, Pudasjärvi. The trondhjemite gneiss is aged 3,500 million years.[6]

Two Finnish melodic death metal bands, Kalmah and Eternal Tears of Sorrow formed in Pudasjärvi.

The Big Dipper and the bear of the Pudasjärvi's coat of arms are based on the old seal of the parish keeper. The coat of arms was designed by Gustaf von Numers, and the Pudasjärvi town council approved it at its meeting on August 2, 1950. The Ministry of the Interior approved the coat of arms for use on September 26 of the same year.[7][8]

Pudasjärvi [.mw-parser-output .IPA a{text-decoration:none}ˈpudɑsjærvi] ist eine Stadt im Norden Finnlands mit 7779 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2020). Das administrative Stadtgebiet ist mit 5.867 km² sehr ausgedehnt und größtenteils dünn besiedelt. Hauptort und Verwaltungssitz der Stadt ist die Siedlung Kurenala, in der rund die Hälfte der Bevölkerung lebt. Der Name Pudasjärvi geht auf den gleichnamigen See zurück und bezeichnet einen See (finnisch järvi), der von einem Flussarm (pudas) durchflossen wird. Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten Pudasjärvis gehören seine Natur und der 432 Meter hohe Iso-Syöte, der südlichste Fjell Finnlands.
