Vigo Township was established in 1837. It was named for Col. François Vigo.[4]
According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 67.11 square miles (173.8 km2), of which 66.13 square miles (171.3 km2) (or 98.54%) is land and 0.97 square miles (2.5 km2) (or 1.45%) is water.[3]
