Formerly called Lockhart, the railroad station was renamed Love following World War I to honor Ernest A. Love, who died in France during the war, and whose father was a longtime Santa Fe railroad engineer.[1][2] Ernest A. Love Field in Prescott was also named in his honor.

The "Love Derailment" occurred in 1977, when a freight train traveling through the hamlet went off its tracks, causing a tank car transporting butane to explode.[3]
