Alamo is an unincorporated town[2] in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States, about 90 miles (140 km) north of Las Vegas along U.S. Route 93. Its elevation is 3,449 feet (1,051 m). As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,080.[3]

History


A post office has been in operation at Alamo since 1905.[4] The community was named in commemoration of the Battle of the Alamo.[5] A large share of the first settlers were Mormons.[6]


Geography


Alamo lies in the Pahranagat Valley. Its economy is dependent primarily upon ranching. The closest attraction is the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge.[7]

Between Alamo and the town of Rachel is the site of the Devonian Alamo Impact Breccia.[8]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Alamo census-designated place has an area of 30.3 square miles (78.4 km2), all of it land.[3]

Tourism


Alamo attracts tourists and truckers traveling from Las Vegas to northern Nevada and Idaho. Attractions include the nearby warm springs, wildlife refuge, Extraterrestrial Highway and Area 51. Gas stations in Alamo cater to these tourists by offering alien memorabilia. There are two truck stops, the Alamo Sinclair, the Ash Springs Shell, that offer large diesel filling areas to attract passing truckers. There are also two open motels in Alamo, the Alamo Inn and Sunset View Inn.

Public education is provided by the Lincoln County School District, with offices in Panaca, Nevada. There are three schools in the valley.

Services


Alamo has a police force, a volunteer fire department, phone and internet services, a medical clinic, and a public library. Nevada Bank and Trust offers financial services to residents. Alamo's first radio station, KQLN 91.3 FM, went on the air on November 17, 2010, but the station's license was cancelled at licensee's request, effective on July 2, 2013.

Álamo es un lugar designado por el censo del Condado de Lincoln en Nevada (Estados Unidos) y es la más grande del Valle de Pahranagat, está a unos 144 km al norte de Las Vegas. Su altitud es de 1.501 metros. Tiene unos 1.666 habitantes, por lo tanto, la densidad de población es de aproximadamente de unos 405 habitantes/km ². El nombre "Alamo" proviene de la lengua española debido a la presencia de este tipo de árbol en la zona de las llanuras aluviales. Álamo está rodeado de bellos paisajes con una gran cantidad de lagos que ofrecen una fantástica pesca. Las zonas arqueológicas y las aguas termales son también lugares de interés para los turistas. Fue fundada en julio de 1901 por cuatro agricultores llamados Fred Allen, Mike Botts, Bert Riggs y William Stewart de Fredonia (Arizona). Su economía depende principalmente de la ganadería.
