Il distretto fu creato con il Local Government Act 1972, il 1º aprile, 1974 dalla fusione dei borough di Folkestone, Hythe, Lydd e New Romney con il Distretto rurale di Elham ed il Romney Marsh. Fino al 2018, il distretto è stato conosciuto come Shepway.

Folkestone and Hythe is a local government district in Kent, England, in the south-east of the county. Its council is based in the town of Folkestone.
