Sefton ist ein Metropolitan Borough im Metropolitan County Merseyside in England. Verwaltungssitz ist die Stadt Bootle. Zum Borough, der nach dem Dorf Sefton benannt ist, gehören außerdem die Orte Ainsdale, Aintree, Birkdale, Crosby, Formby, Maghull und Southport. Die Reorganisation der Grenzen und der Kompetenzen der lokalen Behörden führte 1974 zur Bildung des Metropolitan Borough. Fusioniert wurden dabei die County Boroughs von Bootle und Southport, die Urban Districts Formby und Lutherland sowie ein Teil des West Lancashire Rural District. Diese Gebietskörperschaften gehörten zuvor zur Grafschaft Lancashire.
1986 wurde Sefton faktisch eine Unitary Authority, als die Zentralregierung die übergeordnete Verwaltung der Grafschaft auflöste. Sefton blieb für zeremonielle Zwecke Teil von Merseyside, wie auch für einzelne übergeordnete Aufgaben wie Polizei, Feuerwehr und öffentlicher Verkehr.

The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton is a metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. It was formed on 1 April 1974,[1] by the amalgamation of the county boroughs of Bootle and Southport, the municipal borough of Crosby, the urban districts of Formby and Litherland, and part of West Lancashire Rural District. It consists of a coastal strip of land on the Irish Sea which extends from Southport in the north to Bootle in the south, and an inland part to Maghull in the south-east, bounded by the city of Liverpool to the south, the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley to the south-east, and West Lancashire to the east.[ru] Сефтон
