It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 5,486 (31 December 2021)[2] and covers an area of 1,954.94 square kilometres (754.81 sq mi) of which 1,433.95 km2 (553.65 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 10.53 inhabitants per square kilometre (27.3/sq mi).
The municipality is bilingual, with the majority (88%) being Swedish and the minority (9%) Finnish speakers.[3]
