The RM was incorporated on 1 November 1908. It took its name from an early settler and its first postmaster, William Thompson. Thompson homesteaded on 5-5-6W in about 1874 and his home was central to the early community. The area was known locally as Thompsonville at that time.

Demographics
In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Thompson had a population of 1,518 living in 434 of its 471 total private dwellings, a change of 6.8% from its 2016 population of 1,422. With a land area of 531.24 km2 (205.11 sq mi), it had a population density of 2.9/km2 (7.4/sq mi) in 2021.[2]
