History

During the Napoleonic Wars, in December 1800, Neumarkt am Wallersee was the scene of a military action between the Austrian Army, fleeing after its major defeat in the Battle of Hohenlinden, and the pursuing French Army. The Austrians fared badly in this as in other engagements of this campaign.

Neumarkt am Wallersee ist eine Stadtgemeinde im Nordosten des österreichischen Bundeslandes Salzburg mit 6492 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Jänner 2022). Die nordöstlich der Landeshauptstadt Salzburg liegende, aus zwölf einzelnen Ortschaften bestehende Gemeinde ist zum Teil ländlich strukturiert. Neumarkt gilt als ein Schwerpunkt der Region, wirtschaftlich dominant ist auch der Dienstleistungssektor. Die vormalige Marktgemeinde wurde im Jahr 2000 zur Stadtgemeinde erhoben.
