The locality takes its name from the Kirrama pastoral run in 1870s. The name is thought to be the Indigenous language group name Keremai or Kirimai local to the area.[2]
The Herbert River forms the southern boundary and most of the western. The Herbert River Falls are within the locality, as is the Blencoe Falls section of the Wet Tropics Great Walk.[3]
