Divenne comune a sé nel 1925 distaccandosi dalla township di Long Beach, con il nome di Ship Bottom-Beach Arlington. Nel 1947 si decise di semplificarne il nome passando all'attuale, Ship Bottom[3].
È una località turistica balneare, nota per essere l'accesso alla Long Beach Island, essendo la Route 72 che la collega a Manahawkin, passando per la Manahawkin Bay grazie ad una serie di ponti, l'unica strada che porta dalla terraferma all'isola.

Ship Bottom is a borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 1,156,[19][20][21] reflecting a decline of 228 (−16.5%) from the 1,384 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 32 (+2.4%) from the 1,352 counted in the 1990 Census.[22] The borough is located on Long Beach Island and borders the Atlantic Ocean.
