È situata presso la confluenza del fiume Can nel Chelmer, a circa 50 km a nordest di Londra e a 35 km a sud-ovest di Colchester.
Storia
A Chelmsford Guglielmo Marconi costruì la prima fabbrica di radio del mondo nel 1898; la città è stata anche la sede delle prime trasmissioni radiofoniche nel 1920, mentre le prime trasmissioni radio del mondo furono realizzate a Writtle, nei pressi di Chelmsford, nel 1922.
