West Lane developed between Ayresome and Whinney Banks west of West Lane Hospital. The area became unpopular, by the late 1990s after the A19 and A66 was built to the west (between the Old River Tees and West Lane) and north (through old allotments). Over a third of the properties were void with the area becoming part of the New Deal for Communities (organised by the West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust) as a programme for housing renewal in 1999.[1]
Work then started on acquiring and demolishing 412 houses in preparation for redevelopment and (in 2004) Bellway Homes was appointed to lead the £50 million redevelopment. This involved the construction of 454 new houses and an attempted rename to Acklam Green, being off Acklam Road. West Lane Hospital was renamed in 2021 to Acklam Road Hospital.[2]
