Eshowe ist eine Stadt in der südafrikanischen Provinz KwaZulu-Natal. Sie befindet sich in der Gemeinde uMlalazi im Distrikt King Cetshwayo. 2011 hatte sie 14.744 Einwohner.[1] Eshowe ist die älteste von Europäern gegründete Stadt im Zululand. Der Name kommt vermutlich von der isiZulu-Bezeichnung showe oder shongwe für eine bestimmte Art aus der Familie der Seidenpflanzengewächse. Der Name könnte auch von den Geräuschen des Winds inspiriert worden sein, der durch den mehr als vier Quadratkilometer großen Urwald Dhlinza Forest weht.

Eshowe is the oldest town of European settlement in Zululand,[citation needed] historically also known as Eziqwaqweni, Ekowe or kwaMondi. Eshowe's name is said to be inspired by the sound of wind blowing through the more than 4 km² of the indigenous Dlinza Forest, the most important and striking feature of the town. Although the name is most likely to be derived from the Zulu word for the Xysmalobium shrubs, showe or shongwe.
