The Tambopata National Reserve and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park are one of the most biodiverse places on earth. Records include over 700 species of birds, 1200 species of butterfly, 90 species of mammals, 120 species of reptiles and amphibians and innumerable species of insect. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded.
There are some centres dedicated to the research of eagles, snakes and all the animals that live on the Amazon River.

Der Distrikt Tambopata liegt in der Provinz Tambopata in der Region Madre de Dios in Südost-Peru. Der am 26. Dezember 1912 gegründete Distrikt hat eine Fläche 20.690 km². Beim Zensus 2017 lebten 81.925 Einwohner im Distrikt.[1] Im Jahr 2007 lag die Einwohnerzahl bei 60.214.[1] Die Distriktverwaltung befindet sich in der 186 m hoch gelegenen Provinz- und Regionshauptstadt Puerto Maldonado mit 77.221 Einwohnern (Stand 2017). Puerto Maldonado liegt am Südufer des nach Osten strömenden Río Madre de Dios oberhalb der Einmündung des Río Tambopata.- [en] Tambopata District
