Hoornaar a été une commune indépendante jusqu'au 1^er janvier 1986. Elle a fusionné avec Giessenburg, Hoogblokland, Arkel, Noordeloos et Schelluinen pour former la nouvelle commune de Giessenlanden. La mairie de cette commune se trouve à Hoornaar.

Hoornaar is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland, in the Alblasserwaard, north of the river Merwede and south of the river Lek. It is a part of the municipality of Molenlanden, and lies about 5 km north of Gorinchem.
