The city was created in 2002 by merging five former towns in western Ōkawa District (since dissolved): Shido, Tsuda, Nagao, Sangawa and Ōkawa.[3][4]
Ōkubo-ji, the 88th and final temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage is within the city, also famous for Shido-ji and Nagao-ji. Nagao-ji holds Shamisen-mochitsuki, an annual New Year's event on January 2. [citation needed]
