Abhar (Persian: ابهر) also known as Abhar Chay,[2] is a city in and capital of Abhar County, Zanjan Province, Iran. At the 2010 census its population was 88,000. The second most population in the province, after the city of Zanjan.[3] Abhar is located between Qazvin and the city of Zanjan.

Two of the famous tourist attractions in Abhar include Peer Ahmad Zahrnoush Mausoleum[4] and Imamzadeh Zeidolkabir Mausoleum.[5] Abhar was called Ohar in ancient times. Local people call it Abar. The name Abhar is composed of ab + har and in the Tati language it means mill water. The Abharrud mines have run many mills in the past, which is still the case today.[6] During the Sasanian period, when Khosrow Anoshirvan divided Iran into four parts, and for each party, he appointed a general who was part of the standing corps, Abhar was in the north region of General Sepahbod. During this period, the Abharrud region was under the control of the Mehran dynasty, one of the seven important ruling dynasties of Iran. Among these famous families are Shervin Dashtbi, Bahram Choobin, Piran Gashsab, Gregory and Siavash Razi.[7] Before the Harun al-Rasheed Kingdom, Abhar covered a relatively large area. He separated part of the Caucasus and the Abharrud region from Abhar and joined Qazvin. At the beginning of the 8th lunar century, the province of Abhar had 25 diyats and its court salary was one toman and four thousand dinars. Abhar has been mentioned as a prestigious block of Khamseh province with many gardens and running water. Jean Chardin writes that Abhar had 2,500 houses and gardens during the reign of Shah Abbas II Safavid. If the pilot takes half an hour to cross it.
