Hunderman or Hundarmaan or Hundurmaan is one of the northernmost villages in India and is situated in the Kargil district of Ladakh. It is located 10 km from Kargil, the district headquarters, and is on the banks of the Drass River.[1] It was under Pakistan's control until 1971. Geographically, Hunderman lies in the Baltistan Region. There are two parts of Hunderman: Lower Hunderman and Upper Hunderman.

History



Indo-Pakistan conflicts


At the end of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, Hunderman came under the control of Pakistan.[2] The Indian Army liberated Hunderman after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Road


Hunderman is connected by road to other places in Ladakh and India by the Srinagar-Leh Highway or the NH 1 and the LOC View Point Road.

The nearest railway stations to Hunderman are Baramulla railway station, Sopore railway station and Srinagar railway station located at a distance of 227 kilometres, 222 kilometres and 229 kilometres respectively.


Air


The nearest airport is at Kargil located at a distance of 18 kilometres but it is currently non-operational. The next nearest major airport is Leh Airport located at a distance of 225 kilometres.
