Geografia fisica

Wetzlar si trova nella parte centrale dell'Assia sul fiume Lahn, non lontano dal punto in cui questo cambia direzione in prossimità della confluenza con il fiume Dill.

La città si trova tra diverse regioni del Mittelgebirge, a sud del fiume Lahn si trova il Taunus, a nord del Lahn e ad ovest del Dill comincia il Westerwald; a nord del Lahn e ad est del Dill comincia il Rothaargebirge. La massima elevazione entro i confini cittadini è lo Stoppelberg a 401 m s.l.m.

Le città più vicine sono Gießen (sul Lahn a circa 12 chilometri), Coblenza 80 chilometri lungo il corso del Lahn, Limburg 40 chilometri a ovest, Siegen 50 chilometri al nord-ovest, Dillenburg 30 chilometri a nord, Marburgo 30 chilometri a nordest e Francoforte sul Meno 60 chilometri al sud.

Wetzlar e Gießen sono i due nuclei di questo piccolo (circa 200.000 abitanti) agglomerato urbano dell'Assia centrale (Mittelhessen in tedesco). Lungo le valli del Lahn (a est e a ovest) e del Dill (nord) vi sono altri centri abitati che in parte si fondono con Wetzlar mentre le aree montuose intorno a Wetzlar (a nord-ovest, nordest e verso il sud) sono molto boscose e poco abitate.

Wetzlar ist eine Stadt in Mittelhessen und ehemalige Reichsstadt. Von 1689 bis 1806 war die Stadt der letzte Sitz des Reichskammergerichtes. Wetzlar ist die Kreisstadt des Lahn-Dill-Kreises und – wie sechs weitere größere Mittelstädte im Land Hessen – eine Stadt mit Sonderstatus. Sie übernimmt Aufgaben des Landkreises und gleicht in vielen Bereichen einer kreisfreien Stadt. Sie ist die zwölftgrößte Stadt in Hessen mit 52.969 Einwohnern (31. Dezember 2021). Die Hochschulstadt ist als wichtiges Kultur-, Industrie- und Handelszentrum eines der zehn Oberzentren im Land Hessen.

Wetzlar (German pronunciation: [ˈvɛt͡slaːʁ] (listen)) is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany. It is the twelfth largest city in Hesse with currently 55,371 inhabitants at the beginning of 2019 (including second homes).[3] As an important cultural, industrial and commercial center, the university town is one of the ten regional centers in the state of Hesse. A former free imperial city, it gained much of its fame as the seat of the Imperial Supreme Court (Reichskammergericht) of the Holy Roman Empire. Located 51 kilometers north of Frankfurt,[4] at 8° 30′ E, 50° 34′ N, Wetzlar straddles the river Lahn and is on the German Timber-Frame Road, which passes mile upon mile of half-timbered houses. Historically, the city has acted as the hub of the Lahn-Dill-Kreis on the north edge of the Taunus. Tourists know the city for its ancient town and its medieval Catholic/Protestant shared cathedral of St. Mary. Notable architectural features include the Eisenmarkt and the steep gradients and tightly-packed street layout of a medieval town. The building of the sandstone cathedral commenced in the 12th century in Romanesque style. In the later Middle Ages the construction continued under a master plan in Gothic style. The church was never finished—one steeple still remains uncompleted. The cathedral suffered heavy damage in the Second World War from aerial bombing, but restoration took place in the 1950s. On the outskirts of town along the river stand the ruins of several stone towers.
