Son nom fait référence à sa géographie montagneuse, au bord de la Durance, entre Gap et Digne-les-Bains. Grande commune par sa taille (près de 48 km2), résultat de la fusion de trois communes, elle est petite par sa population. Comme beaucoup de communes alentour, elle a connu un exode rural important, et reste aujourd'hui axée sur des activités rurales : agriculture (dont l'agneau de Sisteron), tourisme notamment randonnées.
