Geografia fisica
Il dipartimento di Cauca si affaccia sull'Oceano Pacifico ad ovest, confina con i dipartimenti di Tolima e Valle del Cauca a nord, con Huila e Caquetá ad est e con Nariño e Putumayo a sud.
Il territorio è costituito da una pianura costiera attraversata dal fiume San Juan de Micay a cui segue a est la Cordigliera Occidentale. Proseguendo ad est oltre la valle di Pubenza, in cui è situata la capitale Popayán, si estende la Cordigliera Centrale che raggiunge i 5.750 metri nel Nevado del Huila nel settore nord-orientale di Cauca.
L'isola di Gorgona, dichiarata parco nazionale, fa parte del dipartimento di Cauca.

Das Departamento del Cauca ist ein Departamento im Südwesten Kolumbiens. Zu Cauca, das im Westen an den Pazifik grenzt, gehören die Inseln Gorgona (ca. 50 km westlich vor der Küste) und Malpelo (ca. 450 km westlich vor der Küste). Die weiteren Grenzen teilt sich das Departamento im Norden mit Valle del Cauca und Tolima, im Osten mit Huila und Caquetá und im Süden mit Putumayo und Nariño.[en] Cauca Department
Cauca Department (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈkawka], Spanish: Departamento del Cauca) is a Department of Southwestern Colombia. Located in the southwestern part of the country, facing the Pacific Ocean to the west,[3] the Valle del Cauca Department to the north, Tolima Department to the northeast, Huila Department to the east, and Nariño Department to the south. Putumayo and Caqueta Departments border the southeast portion of Cauca Department as well. It covers a total area of 29,308 km2 (11,316 sq mi), the 13th largest in Colombia. Its capital is the city of Popayán. The offshore island of Malpelo belongs to the department. It is located in the southwest of the country, mainly in the Andean and Pacific regions (between 0°58′54″N and 3°19′04″N latitude, 75°47′36″W and 77°57′05″W longitude) plus a tiny part (Piamonte) in the Amazonian region.
