The present village was founded in 1790 by Lucas de Herazo and Mendigaña.

San Agustín Archaeological Park
Main article: San Agustín Archaeological Park
The area is very well known for its pre-Columbian archaeological sites belonging to the ancient San Agustin culture. These sites comprise the San Agustín Archaeological Park, which generates significant revenue to the economy due to the high volume of tourists, both Colombian and foreigners. This site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

San Agustín es un municipio colombiano ubicado en el sur del departamento de Huila. Yace sobre la parte oriental de la región del macizo colombiano, donde se encuentra el más alto valle del río Magdalena, resguardado por las primeras estribaciones de las cordilleras central y oriental. Su extensión territorial es de 1.574 km², su altura es de 1.730 msnm y su temperatura promedio es de 18ºC.[3]
