    La ville de Grande Cache fut officiellement créée par décret d'un Ordre en Conseil N°1605/66 du gouvernement provincial de l'Alberta en date du .

    Le site de Grande Cache doit son nom français à son histoire. Le lieu était fréquenté dès le XIXe siècle par les Amérindiens de la Première Nation crie ainsi que par les voyageurs canadiens-français, iroquois et métis qui se retrouvaient en ce lieu de dépôts de fourrures situé au confluent de la rivière de la Paix et de la rivière Smoky.

    Par la suite, une mine de charbon fut exploitée et la ville se développa. La population a diminué entre les recensements de 1996 et 2006, passant de 4 441 personnes à 3 783 en dix ans.

    Grande Cache ist eine Stadt im westlichen Alberta zu Füßen des Grande Mountain, die Provinzhauptstadt Edmonton befindet sich etwa 440 km östlich.

    Grande Cache is a hamlet in west-central Alberta, Canada within and administered by the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16.[5] It is located on Highway 40 approximately 145 kilometres (90 mi) northwest of Hinton and 435 kilometres (270 mi) west of Edmonton. Grande Cache overlooks the Smoky River, is at the northern edge of Alberta's Rockies, and serves as the gateway to the Willmore Wilderness Park. The hamlet held town status prior to 2019.
