Situated in a potato farming area, Saint-André was founded in 1904.

In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Saint-André had a population of 1,794 living in 756 of its 782 total private dwellings, a change of -5.6% from its 2016 population of 1,901. With a land area of 136.19 km2 (52.58 sq mi), it had a population density of 13.2/km2 (34.1/sq mi) in 2021.[4]
