Lagg is a hamlet on Lagg Bay, on the east coast of the island of Jura,[1] in the council area of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is on the A846[2] 8 miles (13 km) from Craighouse. Lagg consists of two main areas, Lagg township, above a steep slope from the bay, away from the coastal edge. The former inn is the other. Dunchraobhan (a single dwelling) is at a similar elevation to Lagg.[3]

History


The name "Lagg" means "The hollow".[4] It once was linked from Knapdale with a ferry,[5] which in the 1800s was the principal ferry route from Jura.[6] A proposal to have a car ferry to the mainland was voted against by residents due to increased traffic from people travelling to Islay.[7][8] Lagg once had a population of 70 but now only four houses remain in the entire glen. Lagg once had a school, a post office[9][10] and an inn called Lagg Inn which is now Lagg Farm.[11]

Lagg ist eine kleine Siedlung auf der schottischen Hebrideninsel Jura und gehört administrativ somit zu der Council Area Argyll and Bute, und ist 14 km von Craighouse entfernt. Lagg kann von Leargybreck aus über eine einspurige Straße (A846) erreicht werden, die über Tarbert bis nach Lussagiven führt. Die Siedlung liegt an der Ostküste der Insel an den Ufern der gleichnamigen Lagg Bay. Lagg hatte im 19. Jahrhundert eine gewisse Bedeutung als Standort des Postamts von Jura (die Siedlung entwickelte sich hauptsächlich deshalb)[1] sowie als Fährhafen für Vieh[2] von Islay und Jura, das von dort 9 km über das Meer nach dem schottischen Festland (Keills in Knapdale) verschifft wurde. Im Jahr 1901 wurden ungefähr 2000–3000 Stück Vieh dorthin verladen.[3] Die Fährverbindung ist heute eingestellt.[4][2][5] Die Siedlung hatte einmal eine Kneipe.[6]
