Die Stadt liegt etwa 26 Kilometer vom Grand Central Terminal entfernt. 1900 lebten noch 14.720 Einwohner in New Rochelle. 1910 waren es 28.867, 1920 36.213 und 1940 58.408. Im Jahr 2020 belief sich die Bevölkerungszahl auf 79.726 Einwohner. Der Name der Stadt rührt von der französischen Hugenottenfestung La Rochelle her.

Some residents refer to the city as New Rock or New Rock City.

La ville est fondée en 1688 par des réfugiés huguenots (protestants français), fuyant les persécutions exercées en France. Beaucoup de ces colons sont des commerçants bourgeois originaires de la ville de La Rochelle, en France, suggérant ainsi le choix du nom de Nouvelle Rochelle, anglicisé en New Rochelle.
