Lors du recensement de 2010, sa population est de 6 354 habitants[1]. La municipalité s'étend sur 7 114 milles carrés (18 425,18 km2), dont 0,22 milles carrés (0,57 km2) d'étendues d'eau[1].
La ville devient une municipalité indépendante d'Egg Harbor Township en 1885 sous le nom de South Atlantic City. Elle adopte son nom actuel en 1909[2], en référence à la ville anglaise de Margate[3].

As of the 2020 U.S. census, Margate City's population was 5,317, a reduction of 1,037 over the previous decade.[18] As of the 2010 U.S. census, the city's population was 6,354,[19][20][21] reflecting a decline of 1,839 (−22.4%) from the 8,193 counted in the 2000 census, which had in turn declined by 238 (−2.8%) from the 8,431 counted in the 1990 census.[22]- [fr] Margate City
