    Étymologie


    El Cajón, phrase espagnole pour « la boîte, le tiroir », a été enregistré pour la première fois le 10 septembre 1821, en tant que nom alternatif pour sitio rancho Santa Mónica, décrivant la « mise en boîte » de la localité dans la vallée[3], dans une vallée « encaissée ».

The city takes its name from Rancho El Cajón, which was in turn named for the box-like shape of the valley which surrounds the city, which is also the origin of the city's common nickname of "The Box".[7]
