Le comté a été créé en 1722 comme Carteret Precinct et a gagné le statut de comté en 1739. Il a été nommé pour Sir George de Carteret, l'un des huit Lord propriétaires de Caroline, ou pour son descendant et héritier John Carteret, 2^e comte Granville.

La plupart du comté fait partie de la côte de cristal (en).

As of the 2020 Census, the population was 67,686.[1] Its county seat is Beaufort.[2] The county was created in 1722 as Carteret Precinct and gained county status in 1739.[3] It was named for Sir George Carteret, one of the 17th century English Lords Proprietor, or for his descendant and heir John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville.
