Le comté a été créé en 1822 distraction d'une partie des comtés de Botetourt, de Bath County et de Monroe (maintenant en Virginie-Occidentale).

Selon le recensement de 2010, la population était de 16 250 habitants pour une superficie de 1 153 Km².

Alleghany County[1] ist ein County im Bundesstaat Virginia der Vereinigten Staaten. Laut der Volkszählung im Jahr 2020 hatte das County 15.223 Einwohner und eine Bevölkerungsdichte von 13,1 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer. Der Verwaltungssitz (County Seat) ist Covington, benannt nach General Leonard Covington, einem Helden im Krieg von 1812 und Freund von James Madison und Thomas Jefferson.

It is bordered by the Allegheny Mountains, from which the county derives its name, and it is the northernmost part of the Roanoke Region.
