    C'est l'un des comtés originaux de Californie, créé en 1850. Son nom fut tout d'abord "Branciforte", d'après le nom d'un village espagnol fondé dans la région en 1797, mais il fut changé moins de deux mois plus tard pour "Santa Cruz".

    Santa Cruz County (/ˌsæntə ˈkruːz/ (listen)), officially the County of Santa Cruz, is a county on the Pacific coast of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 270,861.[4] The county seat is Santa Cruz.[5] Santa Cruz County comprises the Santa Cruz–Watsonville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area. The county is on the California Central Coast,[6] south of the San Francisco Bay Area region. The county forms the northern coast of the Monterey Bay, with Monterey County forming the southern coast.

El condado posee un área de 1 573 km² (de los cuales 419 km² están cubiertos de agua), una población de 255 602 habitantes, y una densidad de población de 222 hab/km² (según el censo nacional de 2000). Este condado fue fundado en 1850. Es el segundo condado más pequeño en extensión territorial del Estado, después del de San Francisco.[1] El condado también forma la parte norte del Área de la Bahía de Monterrey.
