    Créé en 1875, le comté est nommé en l'honneur de John L. Pennington (en), gouverneur du territoire du Dakota de 1874 à 1878[1].

    Selon l'American Community Survey, en 2010, 94,75 % de la population âgée de plus de 5 ans déclare parler l'anglais à la maison, 1,79 % l'espagnol, 1,17 % navajo ou dakota, 0,72 % l'allemand et 1,57 % une autre langue[2].

Its county seat is Rapid City.[2] The county was created in 1875, and was organized in 1877.[3] It is named for John L. Pennington, fifth Governor of Dakota Territory, who held office in 1875 when the county was formed.[4]
