Essex County is located in the northeastern part of New Jersey. As of the 2020 U.S. census, the county's population was 863,728,[5] making it the state's second-most populous county, behind Bergen County. For 2021, the Population Estimates Program calculated a population of 854,917 which was ranked third of the state's 21 counties (with Middlesex County ranked second).[4] Its county seat is Newark,[2] the most populous city in the state. Essex County is one of the centrally located counties in the New York metropolitan area.
