Monroe Township was organized in 1855.[4]
According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 24.31 square miles (63.0 km2), of which 23.85 square miles (61.8 km2) (or 98.11%) is land and 0.46 square miles (1.2 km2) (or 1.89%) is water.[3]
