Il nome Stafford in italiano significa "pianeggiante", data la sua collocazione su una pianura; la città sorge su un fiume, il Trent, strategicamente importante per la regione.

Nel 913 la cittadina fu fortificata e diventò capitale della regione Mercia; nel medioevo vi fu edificato un castello.

It lies about 15 miles (24 km) north of Wolverhampton, 15 miles (24 km) south of Stoke-on-Trent and 24 miles (39 km) northwest of Birmingham. The town had a population of 70,145 in the 2021 census,[1] It is the main settlement within the larger borough of Stafford which had a population of 136,837 (2021).[2]
