La cittadina si trova in prossimità del confine con l'Inghilterra (Chester, che si trova all'incirca alla stessa latitudine, dista ca. 40 km[1]) ed è situata tra Wrexham e Denbigh (rispettivamente a 30 km[2] a nord-ovest della prima e a ca. 15 km[3] a sud-est della seconda).
Origini del nome
Il toponimo Ruthin/Rhuthun deriva probabilmente dal gallese rhudd, che significa "rosso" e che può far riferimento sia al colore delle rocce del luogo su cui è sorta la città, sia al colore del castello.[4]
Monumenti e luoghi d'interesse
La cittadina si caratterizza per i numerosi edifici a graticcio, risalenti ad un periodo che va dal XIV al XVII secolo.[4]
Tra i monumenti principali, vi sono le rovine del castello, fatto costruire nel 1277 da Edoardo I d'Inghilterra.[4][5][6]

Ruthin (/ˈrɪθɪn/ (listen) RITH-in; Welsh: Rhuthun) is a market town and community in Denbighshire, Wales, in the south of the Vale of Clwyd. It is Denbighshire's county town. The town, castle and St Peter's Square lie on a hill, skirted by villages such as Pwllglas and Rhewl. The name comes from the Welsh rhudd (red) and din (fort), after the colour of sandstone bedrock, from which the castle was built in 1277–1284.[3] The Old Mill, Ruthin, is nearby. Maen Huail, a registered ancient monument attributed to the brother of Gildas and King Arthur, stands in St Peter's Square.[fr] Ruthin
