La chiesa del villaggio risale al IX secolo ed è stata preceduta da un insediamento probabilmente risalente al tempo del re Alfredo il Grande nell'VIII secolo. Del villaggio più antico, c'è ancora una chiesa e una croce commemorativa nel centro del villaggio, ai piedi del quale erano stati letti importanti annunci.[1]

Il Royal Air Force College Cranwell è al centro della storia dell'aeronautica britannica. Fu probabilmente il primo centro di addestramento per l'aviazione militare al mondo.[2] La costruzione del centro iniziò nel 1915 nel mezzo della prima guerra mondiale. Oltre alle attività di addestramento, la base ospitava un ospedale militare e sviluppò nuovi velivoli. Il primo jet della Gran Bretagna decollò per il suo primo volo da Cranwell nel 1941.[3]

Cranwell is a village in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is part of the civil parish of Cranwell and Byard's Leap and is situated approximately 3 miles (5 km) north-west from Sleaford and 14 miles (23 km) south-east from the city and county town of Lincoln. The principal through road, the B1429 between the A15 to the east and the A17 to the west, joins the village to RAF Cranwell. The appropriate civil parish is called Cranwell, Brauncewell and Byard's Leap with a population of 2,827 at the 2011 census.[1]
