Catterick sarebbe stato il luogo della battaglia di Catraeth (attorno al 600) menzionata nel poema epico Y Gododdin: si tratta di una battaglia davvero combattuta tra i regni britannici e gli anglosassoni della Bernicia.[3] Catraeth fu poi una delle sedi del regno britannico del Rheged.

- Cataractonium sembrerebbe essere un misto di greco e latino che significa "luogo di una cascata", ma nella Mappa del mondo di Tolomeo è indicata come Κατουρακτονιον, che sembra derivare dal celtico col significato di "luogo di fortificazioni da battaglia".

Catterick (/ˈkætərɪk/) is a village, civil parish and electoral ward in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it is 8.5 miles (13.7 km) north-west of the county town of Northallerton just to the west of the River Swale. It lends its name to nearby Catterick Garrison and the nearby hamlet of Catterick Bridge, the home of Catterick Racecourse where the village Sunday market is held. It lies on the route of the old Roman road of Dere Street and is the site of the Roman fortification of Cataractonium.- [it] Catterick
