La ville est située sur la Greet River, à environ 14 miles (22 km) au nord de Nottingham. En plus de l'église cathédrale et paroissiale de Sainte-Marie de Southwell, il y a un certain nombre d'autres édifices historiques dans la ville, notamment les maisons de la rue de l'église et à Westgate.

Les restes d'une villa romaine ont été excavés en 1959.

La ville est jumelée avec Sées, en France.

Southwell (/ˈsaʊθwəl/, locally /ˈsʌðəl/)[1][2] is a minster and market town in the district of Newark and Sherwood in Nottinghamshire, England. It is home to the grade-I listed Southwell Minster, the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The population of the town was recorded at 7,297 in the 2011 Census. The town is on the River Greet and is located geographically 9 miles (14 km) west of Newark on Trent, 15 miles (24 km) north-east of Nottingham, 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Mansfield and 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Worksop.
